Essential Storage Preparation

Before you start packing your storage unit, proper preparation is key to keeping your belongings safe and organized.

Plan Ahead

Create a plan before you start. Decide what items you'll store and how often you might need to access them. This helps organize the unit efficiently.

Sort & Declutter

Take this opportunity to declutter. Donate or discard items you no longer need. This saves space and reduces clutter in your storage unit.

Use Uniform Boxes

Use sturdy, uniform-sized boxes for easy stacking. This maximizes space and stability within the unit.

Label Everything

Clearly label boxes with their contents. This makes it easier to find items without having to open every box.

Furniture Storage

Proper furniture storage protects your investment and maximizes space efficiency.

General Furniture Tips

  • Disassemble when possible: Take apart larger furniture to save space. Keep screws and parts in labeled bags taped to the furniture.
  • Wrap furniture: Cover furniture with protective covers or sheets to prevent dust accumulation.
  • Clean before storing: Ensure all furniture is clean and dry before storage to prevent mold and odors.
  • Use furniture spaces: Store smaller items inside drawers and cabinets to maximize space.
  • Stack carefully: Place heavier items at the bottom and lighter ones on top to prevent damage.

Mattress Storage

  • Store on side: Store mattresses on their sides to save space and prevent sagging.
  • Use mattress covers: Protect mattresses with proper covers to keep them clean and dry.

Create Aisle Space

Leave a clear pathway down the center of the unit so you can easily access items at the back.

Use Shelving Units

If allowed, shelving units provide additional vertical storage space and keep items organized.

Keep Essentials Accessible

Place frequently needed items near the entrance for easy access without moving everything.
